Considerable planning and assessment are undertaken by the state\u2019s Department of Transport (colloquially known as VicRoads) to facilitate the transport of a superload. This includes ensuring the integrity and public safety of road assets and infrastructure. In particular, any damage to highway bridges is a serious public safety concern and reduces the functionally of the transportation network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">As such, the Department of Civil Engineering at Monash University, together with VicRoads, have adopted the Resensys wireless system as means to monitor and assess bridge structural integrity. The team are the first to implement the remote wireless system for bridges in Australia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Monitored Variables<\/strong>: concrete and steel strain, tilt, displacement (on cracks), temperature and humidity  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Installed Devices<\/strong>: a number of different SenSpots including concrete <a href=\"https:\/\/resensys.com\/r20\/wireless-products-senspot\/metal-structural-precision-strain-stress-gauge-low-power-high-sample.html\">strain transducers<\/a>, steel <a href=\"https:\/\/resensys.com\/r20\/wireless-products-senspot\/metal-structural-precision-strain-stress-gauge-low-power-high-sample.html\">strain gauges<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/resensys.com\/r20\/wireless-products-senspot\/outdoor-concrete-steel-easy-install-wide-range-humidity-temperature-monitor.html\">temperature and humidity gauges<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/resensys.com\/r20\/wireless-products-senspot\/structural-movement-tilt-deformation-damage-detection.html\">tiltmeters<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/resensys.com\/r20\/wireless-products-senspot\/easy-install-small-accurate-displacement-gauge-crack-meter.html\">crack gauges<\/a>, as well as cellular <a href=\"https:\/\/resensys.com\/r20\/wireless-products-senspot\/senimax-low-power-performance-data-collector-communication-gateway.html\">SeniMax <\/a>gateways, are currently installed and operating across 9 highway bridges in Victoria to collect data and send them to main server and <a href=\"https:\/\/resensys.com\/r20\/wireless-products-senspot\/senscope-monitoring-diagnostics-data-display.html\">SenScope<\/a>. The Resensys system has assisted in real-time integrity monitoring of a number of bridges under superload convoys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"975\" height=\"515\" src=\"http:\/\/www.resensys.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Picture1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.resensys.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Picture1.png 975w, https:\/\/www.resensys.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Picture1-300x158.png 300w, https:\/\/www.resensys.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Picture1-768x406.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 975px) 100vw, 975px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Load Test Condition:<\/strong> load rating includes a 255-tonne generator transported on a convoy weighing in total 650 tonnes and 108 meters in length on 5 historical (pre-1960s) concrete bridges. Moreover, the long battery life of the system allows continuous monitoring for future superloads, and on the long-term performance assessments of the structure as normal traffic freight loads continue to increase in Victoria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The project was led by  Dr. Colin Caprani (Senior Lecturer, Structural Engineering at Monash University).
