Brief Description and the work performed by Resensys
Case definition: Movable Bridges (Bascule Bridges) at the Kennedy Space Center (NASA) in Florida were instrumented with a network of Resensys wireless strain gauge SenSpot™ sensors. The sensors were installed on load bearing members to monitor stress, vibration, inclination and to detect massive loads and loading cycles.
Problems:
- Excessive stress at girders and load bearing members
- Inclination and vibration at load bearing members
How to address the problem: Resensys wireless monitoring systems have been deployed in a bunch of bridges the Kennedy Space Center (NASA) in Florida and based on the monitoring needs of each bridge:
- Wireless strain gauge: monitoring responses of the girders to loading and temperature change and detecting significant loads
- Wireless tilt meter: monitoring inclination of structural members
- Wireless accelerometer: monitoring vibration at piers and girders
Results:
- Detecting over-weight loads at the bridges and provide on-call remote support and reports for permit crossings
- Monitoring stress/strain and vibration at girders and significant structural members constantly to prevent sudden potential failure
- Detecting over-tilting of structural members
- Provide advance warning of potential failure by detecting early signs of structural distress and by collecting steady-state data and alert systems
