Asset Management – wouldn’t it be nice to have a real-time pulse on your most critical infrastructure assets?

Few things are more frustrating to commuters than a lengthy traffic detour.  Hours and miles are added to trips and patience erodes. To transportation officials, an unexpected bridge inspection report represents an immediate call to action.  Safety is prioritized and swift steps are taken to assess and act on the information provided during the inspection.

The case study in Resensys’ article on page 32 of the ARTBA Transportation Builder July/ August 2021 shows an example of how Michael Baker International and NJDOT (New Jersey Department of Transportation) used Resensys’ sensors as part of their solution to a Route 15 closure, and left the sensors in place for further long-term, continuous monitoring.

To paraphrase Chung C. Fu, director of the Bridge Engineering Software & Technology (BEST) Center of the University of Maryland at College Park, instrumentation of bridges (can) detect subtle structural problems that can be invisible during inspection.

Data insights from sensors can not only provide insight into the behavior of bridges as Dr. Fu also mentions, but can also allow DOT’s to implement real-time, data-based asset management.  Continuous real-time data can be used to validate “twinning” models, assist with maintenance priorities, and provide alerts in case of potentially alarming behavior, or help defray costs of load-rating activities.

Resensys’ products are particularly well-suited for asset management because they are wireless, so they are easy and cost effective to install, and require little to no maintenance or calibration once installed.  They are either energy self-sufficient or ultra low-power with a 10-yr battery life.  These characteristics make them a sustainably attractive solution with a small environmental footprint.

With a high level of data integrity, Resensys’ suite also provides flexibility to DOT’s who may wish to integrate the data from these accurate, robust sensors into other data platforms and or analytics.

Data-driven decision making in the world of asset management is becoming increasingly common place. Click here to obtain further information on how Resensys’ products and engineering know-how can help inform your asset management decisions.
